Hi, my name is Jenna Carlson and I have been yoga-ing it up at PLAY for about seventh months now. Well, to be honest, PLAY was the beginning of my yoga practice. Last fall, in an attempt to find a workout routine both my boyfriend and I would enjoy and stick with, Darrell [that’s the boyfriend] suggested we try yoga. I had actually never even considered yoga as an option . . . not because I was skeptical, but because I wasn’t sure I would even like it. [I couldn’t even touch my toes for crying out loud!] But, after a quick Google search, we found ourselves in Catherine Mazur’s Wednesday night PLAYgrounds class learning the basics of yoga. Then, fast-forward to present time; one could easily say we are a little yoga obsessed.
Here’s a little bit about me: I’m originally from Nebraska. [Yes, it’s true.] I am farm-raised, corn-fed, and know more than I care to mention about making a mean mud pie! I occupied my early twenties trying to figure out what made “Jenna” tick. I acted onstage, earned two music degrees, and was an on-air television host for Central Nebraska’s FOX affiliate, FOX 4 & 17. I left the so-called “Good Life” in the spring of 2009 for the sunny [non-snowing] shores of California. I had NO idea what this adventure would bring. But, now four years later, I am head-over-heels in love with an amazing guy [can I count that as an inversion?] and work full-time with my creative side. [Yep, no complaints here!] During the day, I keep myself occupied with our three dogs, my upholstery business: Homebird Upholstery, my lifestyle blog: Lucky Little Mustardseed, and the occasional audition . . . and at night, well, I’m either at yoga here at PLAY, cooking up a storm, or watching some documentary with Darrell.
I cannot even begin to list all the amazingness [is that a word?] yoga has given me. I used to be one of those people who went to the Chiropractor two-three times a week for my headaches. And because of yoga, there are no more Chiropractors, no more headaches. I could barely touch below my knees [for crying out loud] and now, I can touch the floor! Yoga has brought such balance to my life. My artsy anxiety [overall] stays in check. My body no longer experiences pain during demanding upholstery gigs. I am happier, healthier, and after a doctor’s physical a few weeks ago, I guess I’m also 15 pounds lighter? [Who knew!]
If you are just starting your yoga practice, please, please, please keep with it. You have no idea what inner peace awaits you. Thank you to Jess, Ian, and all of the teachers at PLAY for putting up with us [and our million-and-one yoga questions]. You have improved our quality of life so much. We are forever in your debt!
